Spanish for educators course curriculum

Spanish for Educator Level 1 (Beginners)

Course Objective:
At the completion of the 10-hour Spanish for Educators course, educators will gain confidence by learning to communicate better with the growing Hispanic population in their school district. A valuable and important aspect of the course is that the educators will be given support material along with clear guidelines defining the mastery process so they will be able to continue working at home to achieve a higher degree of fluency. (This course, will be held in conjunction with an additional 15-hours of our Spanish conversation course, for a total of 25 hours of class time in the week.)

Topics Covered in Spanish for Educators Course:

 

  1. Cultural issues/meetings & greetings/showing affection

  2. Pronunciation of Spanish language & common Hispanic names

  3. School enrollment

  4. School supplies vocabulary & basic classroom commands

  5. Basic communication with parents/guardians

  6. School rules/dress code/discipline problems

  7. Health care/illnesses/body parts

  8. School personnel & facilities

  9. Address/numbers/phone

  10. Learning disabilities

Sample Activities in Course:

  • Developing Spanish mouth – Pronunciation/vocalization work

  • Vocabulary building exercises

  • Learning high frequency verbs

  • Formulating and answering simple questions

  • Diary writing practice

  • Conversation and role play

  • Simple translation activities

  • Visitation to local public school

Spanish for Educators Level 2 (Intermediate – Advanced)

Course Objective:
At the completion of this 10-course, educators will acquire a stronger command of Spanish needed in the educational setting, to more effectively communicate with students and their families in a variety of context. A valuable and important aspect of the course is that the educators will be given support material along with clear guidelines defining the mastery process so they will be able to continue working at home to achieve a higher degree of fluency. (This course, will be held in conjunction with an additional 15-hours of our Spanish conversation course, for a total of 25 hours of class time in the week.)

Topics Covered in Spanish for Educators Course:

  1. Learn to create a welcoming feeling and respect the language and culture of ESL students and their families.

  2. Learn to speak with proper etiquette, using language of respect.

  3. Expand vocabulary, proper grammar usage, and colloquial expressions needed for talking to students and/or their parents in the following situations:

  • Enrollment

  • Parent meetings/conference

  • Practical classroom situations with students

  • Conducting and practicing oral translating in a school setting for parent/teacher conferences.

  • Learn to make basic written correspondence to parents.

Sample Activities in Course:

  • Discussion forums to develop listening and speaking skills

  • Role plays & mock interviews

  • Translation activities

  • Written diaries

  • Conversation Activities

  • Group presentations on communication issues with ESL student and their families

  • Writing integration paper of how educators will utilize what they learn in school setting

  • Visitation to local public school
